CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — State conservation officers in central Indiana are seeking the public's help in solving the fatal shooting of a state-protected bobcat.

Department of Natural Resources Cpl. Blaine Gillan says the animal's shooting was reported Thursday in Montgomery County, northwest of Indianapolis. He says the 29-pound bobcat died of a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Bobcats are protected under state law. Gillan says a special license is required to shoot a bobcat if it is a nuisance, or for scientific purposes. He says he hadn't received any reports of nuisance bobcats in the area.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the DNR at 1-800-TIP-IDNR or www.in.gov/dnr . A cash reward is offered and callers can remain anonymous.
