SOUTH BEND -- Douglas Road is about to move. The St. Joseph County Council approved a plan, Tuesday night, to relocate the section of road that travels just north of Notre Dame, between State Road 933 and Juniper Rd.

It would be pushed farther north and widened, eventually reconnecting with its current route at a roundabout just east of Juniper.

The council’s vote was 7 in favor, none opposed, though dozens of neighbors lined up for one last opportunity to voice their displeasure with the project.

“Any project that involves such a busy road needs a great deal of time and consideration, time and consideration that we feel has not yet been present here,” said Tim Cantu, a Notre Dame graduate student who lives nearby.

Others, like Glenda LaMont, disagree. She appreciates the proposed improvements, like safer crosswalks and new bike paths.

“We think that this project shows tremendous leadership,” said LaMont, who co-founded the group Bike the Bend, “it is something that is going to put our area on the cutting edge.”

Notre Dame, which is paying for the relocation, is eager to get started. They hope to have the new road open by the end of next summer.
