Rollover crash on the bypass on Ironwood Bridge Monday night (December 11, 2012) |
Tuesday morning got off to a messy start as dozens of weather-related accidents were reported across our area, but some good news finally came at the end of the morning commute.
The U.S. 20 Bypass from Elm Road to State Road 19 in Elkhart County was shut down for more than two hours because of the very slick conditions. However, it was reopened by 9 a.m.
Lt. Travis Adamson of the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department says deputies responded to numerous crashes on the U.S. 20 Bypass. In the eastbound lane, a mile west of S.R. 19, there were 3 separate crashes involving 20 vehicles in one place at the same time. One person was taken to the hospital from the scene, and the condition of that patient was unknown.
Problems started late Monday night on the bypass in St. Joseph County.
Police were dispatched to the Ironwood Bridge where at least five cars were involved in a chain-reaction style accident.
That accident flipped a pick-up truck.
While the driver of that truck wasn't injured, two other people were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.
Police across our area were kept busy overnight and into the early morning hours as dozens of slide-offs were reported.
The areas dispatchers said were the most slick were along bridges and overpasses on U.S. 31 and U.S. 30.
This morning until further notice, eastbound traffic on the bypass is being diverted onto Elm Road.
But just after 5 a.m., Elkhart County dispatchers were flooded with weather-related traffic accidents.
Dispatchers across our area were very busy this morning with traffic accidents.
Keep in mind, roads tend to ice-over quickly on overpasses on bridges.
