GOSHEN –  Investigators are trying to determine what sparked a big house fire in Goshen early Sunday morning.

At 5:05 a.m., firefighters were called to North 5th Street and Crescent, just south of Middlebury St. near Chamberlain Elementary School.

An Elkhart County emergency dispatcher tells WSBT the blaze spread to at least 2 side-by-side homes in the 400 block of N. 5th. Crews on the scene had said it also expanded to a third structure, but it appears to have been contained to the 2 homes.

It was an historic neighborhood. The homes were over 100-years-old, although the battalion chief tells WSBT they were both vacant.

The chief was not able to say what sparked the blaze. Investigators will spend the day going through the rubble.

Someone was passing by, saw the blaze and called 911.

The home where the fire started was fully engulfed by the time emergency crews arrived on the scene.

"The one house is completely gone, nothing left of it," said Kay Copp, who lives in the area and wrote on WSBT's Facebook page.

Nobody was hurt.

There was an initial report by an officer on the scene of a possible explosion that ignited the big blaze, but that was not confirmed.

NIPSCO was called to turn off the utilities to the homes.
