About 25 Edwardsburg High School students were recently given detention for making a Harlem Shake video in a classroom without the school's permission, one of the students said.

Sophomore Christian Eggleston, who appears in the video and was one of those punished, said they shot the dance video last Friday. Since then it's been viewed more than 6,000 times on YouTube.

"I thought it was kind of ridiculous that we got in trouble," Eggleston said, "we were just trying to have fun."

The students who were punished were mostly seniors, he said.

Edwardsburg High School principal Dr. Jeffrey Leslie declined to comment on the incident, saying district policy prevents him from discussing student discipline with the news media.

"We saw a couple local schools around us doing it so we wanted to give Edwardsburg's version of it," said sophomore Isaac Vite, who was in the video and received a detention, "I think we represented Edwardsburg well."
