ELKHART – Work could begin next summer to totally overhaul a bridge in Elkhart that is showing signs of wear and tear.
It’s located on Simonton St. on the city’s north side.
A recent inspection showed a significant deterioration on an exterior beam.
As a result, the travel lane has been reduced to cut down on traffic and prevent semis and trucks from driving over it.
Right now, the county is working on a design to renovate the bridge and says it is doing work to prevent any problems.
Next summer, it will replace all of the beams on it as well as the bridge deck.
The Elkhart County Highway Department is responsible for any bridge in a city as long as the bridge is not on a state highway.
