One of the world's largest and most aggressive snakes, an African Rock Python, was found in Elkhart County and is assumed to be someone’s lost pet.

With the snake weighing in at 65 pounds and 12 feet long, the python is making Elkhart County Humane Society agents feel uncomfortable because of its unpredictable behavior.

Agents from the Humane Society captured the python on Wednesday after the county police saw teens playing with the snake outside a home.

”This snake is a very aggressive and could have easily constricted and killed them,” said Anne Reel, director of the Elkhart County Humane Society. “They probably thought it was cool to walk around their neighborhood with this snake.”

The Humane Society receives hundreds of animals each month, which includes cats, dogs, and smaller animals – but never a python.

Reel couldn't say for sure how the python became someone's pet, but she believes the illegal pet trade has something to do with it.

”This animal got into a situation, not by its choice, but by humans not doing the appropriate thing,” said Reel.

An animal conversational group is currently searching for a better home for the python.
