ELKHART COUNTY – A local public servant is retiring after 28 years.

Sunday, Elkhart County Jail Chaplain Mike Kupke was honored with a special open house. He says it’s a job that for nearly three decades presented a unique set of challenges.

“The most difficult thing is to see people return recidivism and frankly at this point, I got to know some of the children of young adults I new 20 years ago. That is a difficult thing to see, so breaking that cycle is part of this ministry.”

Kupke says throughout the years, hundreds of volunteers helped him with the jail ministry program.
