Layoffs and eliminating vacant jobs are two key strategies Elkhart General Hospital officials hope will be key in resolving the hospital's stressed finances.

A news release issued Friday indicated the hospital's financial health suffers from Elkhart County's high unemployment rate and reduced reimbursements.

"Salary and benefits are the largest expense in a hospital and unfortunately some positions will be eliminated in the revised (2012) budget," hospital president Gregory Losasso said via the news release.

Roughly 40 jobs will be impacted, but Losasso did not specificy how many would be from layoffs.

"It's important to know most of these changes have no effect on nursing staffing ratios that directly impact patient care," he said.
