Elkhart man arrested for growing marijuana

ELKHART – An Elkhart man is behind bars accused of running a marijuana growing operation.

Police were called to the 29600 block of U.S. 20 West just before noon on Wednesday and arrested 55-year-old David Benn.

Officers from Elkhart and Indiana State Police found 43 pot plants in various stages of growth and 2 pounds of marijuana. They also seized a Ruger .22 caliber rifle, drug paraphernalia and other equipment used to cultivate marijuana.

Benn was booked on 3 charges – Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Cultivating Marijuana over 30 grams and Possession of Marijuana over 30 grams. All are felonies.

In the first place, it is a plant that grows wild and should not be illegal. In the second place, this is why states are releasing real criminals early due to overcrowding. Over 30 years ago the federal government started a medical marijuana program that supplied 34 people with 9 to 10 ounces of high grade marijuana every month. A couple of the 34 are still living and the government still supplies them. You can sit in your own home and drink enough alcohol to kill you and that is perfectly legal, but you can't roll one and somke it. There has never been a documented case of marijuana overdose.

In order for a human to consume enough marijuana to be fatal, they would have to consume nearly 40,000 times the amount of THC required to intoxicate them. In contrast, it only requires about 5 to 10 times the amount of alcohol required to intoxicate, to be fatal. For example, if it requires 3 beers to intoxicate you, it only requires 15 to 30 beers to kill you. However, if it takes you 3 'hits' of marijuana to intoxicate you, it would require 120,000 hits to kill you. Thus, it is virtually impossible to die of a marijuana overdose.

So it is ok with our government if you drink yourself to death but you better not smoke a joint.

Whoa Lawdy, I'm glad they got him off the streets. What a violent man he was. I'm so thankful the police had the time to get all the rapists, stealers and killers away from the public and that we are safe now thanks to their actions. I guess arrest them if you got'em!
