ELKHART – An Elkhart man is battling for his life after his car went off the road and hit a tree just west of the Elkhart city limits early Sunday morning.

Elkhart County police say 39-year-old Steven Briskie was driving west on County Road 16 in his Ford Explorer around 1:30 a.m. when his SUV drifted off the north side of the road.

He tried to bring the Explorer back on the road but overcorrected, went across C.R. 16 and slammed into a tree on the south side of the road.

The accident was just east of C.R. 1.

Briskie was found unconscious with head injuries and was rushed to South Bend’s Memorial Hospital.

The hospital's nursing supervisor Sunday afternoon said Briskie was in critical condition.

No one else was in the SUV.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash.
