It was a tearful morning in South Bend Monday. Dozens of army reservists said their goodbyes before a year-long deployment to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
The more than 100 Members of the 428th Military Police Company met at South Bend's Army Reserves Center early Monday morning.
First they are heading to El Paso Texas, where they'll train for one month before flying to Cuba.
An Army leader told us that more than half of those leaving today have never been deployed before. Those being deployed are impressed by the support they are receiving from our area.
“The support we get when we are in the airport, it‘s unbelievable,” said Sgt. Thomas Patrick with the U.S. Army. “Rarely do we pay for a cup of coffee…it's a humbling experience”
This unit has a long history of deploying. They helped guard Fort hood Texas right after the 9/11 attacks.
