FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A federal historian has come out against a plan by Fort Wayne's mayor to move a large statue of the city's namesake, Gen. Anthony Wayne.

The News-Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/V7Tisx ) that U.S. National Park Service architectural historian Michele J. Curran strongly criticized the statue's proposed move from Freimann Square to the Allen County Courthouse Greene in a Jan. 3 letter to Mayor Tom Henry.

Curran's letter says it's "extremely insensitive" for the city to seek to move the statue to that "carefully restored" national historical landmark. He says moving the statue of the military leader will damage the courthouse site's "historical integrity."

Henry wants the statue moved to a more visible spot because Freimann Square's dense thicket of trees hides it from view.
