ELKHART COUNTY – An Elkhart County Church holds services at a temporary alternate location Sunday morning after a fire damaged the sanctuary on Saturday.

Crews worked to put out the blaze at First Baptist Church on County Road 17 between Elkhart and Bristol.

The fire started around 2 p.m.

Witnesses say the blaze started in the auditorium and spread up some curtains into the ceiling.

Sunday’s services are being held at Elkhart Christian Academy on C.R. 9 with service times at 8:45 and 10:30 a.m.

“We are certain of this that God’s in control,” reflected Senior Associate Pastor Phil Byars. “He knows exactly what’s happening, and I’m sure that our body of believers will band together, and we’ll be closer as a result of this.”

The church's "Trunk or Treating" fall kids party takes place Sunday at First Baptist Church starting at 4:30 p.m.

But event-goers will stay in the parking lot instead of using the building.

We will find out Monday night if the church will be able to be used as a polling site in next week's election.
