FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Authorities in Fort Wayne say a volunteer firefighter was killed after he lost control of a tanker truck and it flipped over.
Police Sgt. Mark Brooks says the Washington Township Fire Department truck was on its way to a brush fire Sunday night when it crashed while turning at an intersection on the city's northwest side.
Brooks tells The Journal Gazette and WANE-TV that the firefighter was the only person inside the tanker when it crashed. The firefighter's identity wasn't immediately released.
Brooks says it appears water in the tanker shifted as it was turning, causing it to go out of control.
The truck hit three utility poles and stopped on its side about 100 yards from the intersection.
