HOWELL, Mich. (AP) — Friends believe it's a miracle that a child survived a crash in Indiana that killed four members of a Michigan family.
Lori Roberts tells The Journal Gazette newspaper it's hard to believe that 9-month-old William Craft is alive with a broken leg after seeing pictures of the crash scene Sunday in DeKalb County, Ind.
Barbara Pierson's Kia went off Interstate 69, down an embankment and landed on railroad tracks before a freight train smashed into it. Pierson was killed, along with 19-year-old twin daughters Bessie and Margaret and 14-year-old daughter Elizabeth.
William, the survivor, is Margaret's son. The Piersons were from Howell, 45 miles northwest of Detroit, and were returning to Michigan after a family trip.
Authorities don't know why the SUV left the road.
