GOSHEN -- An area college is in the national spotlight for having the best college radio station in the country. It competed against every student operated station at colleges and universities around the nation to win the top prize.

Goshen College’s WGCS 91.1 FM is the best station in the country, according to the Intercollegiate Brodcasting System. “The Globe,” as it’s called, even beat out stations at larger universities.

“It’s a great honor, the other finalist for this award was DePaul in Chicago, which is a Big East school, the same conference as Notre Dame”, said Tony Miller, a student radio staffer. “We are in an NAIA school, so it’s definitely a David and Goliath situation.”

Many of the larger schools involved in the competition had dedicated buildings for their radio stations. WGCS, which went on the air in 1958, was put an in area that originally housed supply closets and theater equipment.

“We beat the best competition out there,” said Benjamin Kelly, a student staffer. “I know, for me, this means a ton. I know I am up here countless hours and so is everyone else, all of us are, just putting in countless hours up here. Hard work finally paid off.”

The station provides a mix of music, news, and sports.

“This is a total team effort and this is the students’ work. A testimony to the work they have done,” said Jason Samuel, station manager. “Here there are 40 students with a common goal, and they all have a sense of ownership in the radio station.”
