FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Police in Fort Wayne say a hit-and-run driver badly injured a 3-year-old boy while backing a van from a driveway.

Police say the boy was taken to a hospital with head injuries after being hit Sunday in a neighborhood on the city's south side.

Police spokeswoman Raquel Foster tells The Journal Gazette (http://bit.ly/NHzAQW) the boy's parents immediately scooped him up and began driving him to the hospital, being met along with way by officers who escorted them there.

Witnesses gave officers a description of the van and driver. The van was later found a couple miles away and officers were looking for the diver who apparently borrowed it.

The injured boy's name wasn't immediately released.
