INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The governor's office says Indiana first lady Karen Pence has undergone surgery to remove her gallbladder and is expected to make a full recovery.

Gov. Mike Pence issued a statement Thursday saying he and his wife are grateful for the prayers and concerns expressed by Hoosiers over her illness since she began suffering abdominal pain a day earlier.

Karen Pence underwent outpatient surgery in Indianapolis and will be recovering at home. The governor's office says she expects to resume her scheduled activities sometime next week.

The governor canceled a scheduled trip to attend events in Jeffersonville and Evansville, but has decided to give a planned speech at a Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce dinner Thursday night.

The Pences have been married since 1985 and have three grown children.
