Sunday, about 1,000 soldiers from the Indiana National Guard will deploy to help with relief efforts in areas affected by Hurricane Irene.
Members of the 293rd Army Guard out of Fort Wayne packed up Saturday. Ground forces, aviation forces and security forces that are part of the Indiana guard are being activated.
"You plan for the worst but hope for the best. We're loading down with MREs, water," said Lt. Col. Jeff Hackett with the 293rd Infantry of the National Guard. "Just making sure we have the right gear to do whatever job's asked of us once we get there."
Guard soldiers will help provide defense support to states and families affected by the storm.They are currently due to convoy out of Indiana Sunday morning.
