BUTLER, Ind. (AP) — Northern Indiana police a sheriff's deputy injured when his cruiser crashed into a culvert was pulled to safety by three local residents before his damaged cruiser caught fire.

WANE-TV reports (http://bit.ly/I2XstA ) that DeKalb County Sherrif's Deputy Brady Thomas suffered a broken ankle and bruising to the ribs in Friday night's crash.

The department says Thomas was on his way to assist Butler police officers with a residential alarm when he lost control of his cruiser and it entered a ditch and crashed into a large culvert.

Police say three local residents saw the deputy's vehicle in the ditch, stepped in and helped get the officer out before the cruiser caught fire.
