BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Authorities have filed murder charges against a southern Indiana woman for what they say was the starvation death of her disabled 25-year-old daughter five years ago.
Investigators say 52-year-old Dorothy Axsom of Bloomington denied food and medicine to her daughter, who weighed 50 pounds when she died in 2006. The Herald-Times reports Casey Axsom was born with epilepsy and cerebral palsy and was unable to walk or feed herself.
Monroe County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bob Miller says Axsom was in charge of her daughter's care and deprived her of food.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Mike Pershing says detectives needed the time to diligently gather evidence in order to arrest Axsom on Wednesday.
Axsom was jailed without bond. Court records show that she didn't immediately have a defense attorney.
