LAPORTE—James Lindsey was sleeping when search crews in LaPorte combed the waters for a possible drowning victim.
That’s according to LaPorte County Police, who said that after waking up, the 65-year-old Lindsey learned he was the subject of a search and contacted authorities.
“He was very apologetic and sorry to cause us all of that searching,’’ Police Capt. Jim Jackson said.
Jackson said Lindsey, while anchoring on Fishtrap Lake on Wednesday, fell into the water after his small fishing boat leaned.
Lindsey told police he held onto the boat and kicked his way to shore while struggling through some thick lily pads.
Police organized a search after the boat, along with cigarette packs, a hat and other items, were spotted in the water several hours later.
Police said Lindsey explained that after returning to his Kingsbury-area home, he didn’t wake up until early afternoon Thursday.
That’s when he heard of the search and notified police that he was all right.
