LAPORTE – A suspected armed robber is behind bars accused of holding up a liquor store.

Police say shortly before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, a man walked into Bottle Shop Too in the 1200 block of Lincolnway and went to the back of the store. He then walked back up the center aisle, approached the sales counter and pulled out a semi-automatic handgun.

The suspect demanded all the money in the cash register drawer. The clerk placed the money in a brown paper bag and gave it to the robber. The man left the store and was last seen walking west on Jefferson Ave.

As a safety precaution, nearby Boston Middle School was placed under lockdown until the area was cleared before students were dismissed.

Police were not releasing the suspect’s name but say he was in his thirties. Investigators say he was staying at a motel in Michigan City. Michigan City police helped make the arrest.
