Hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel were stolen by a truck driver apparently by tampering with a pump at a Family Express.
LaPorte County Police Chief of Detectives John Boyd said police are still investigating how the pump may have been tampered with. According to police, officers were called about 2 p.m. Thursday to Family Express at 1874 W. U.S. 20 in Springville.
Store manager Ryan Alvarez told investigators the man had just paid for 6 gallons of diesel fuel and left.
Alvarez said he then checked the holding tank and discovered 400 gallons of diesel fuel were missing, according to police.
Police said the store manager also told investigators he discovered in early December the same man paid for 25 gallons of fuel but actually pumped 400 gallons.
Alvarez told police the pump had been tampered with and shut down the pump.
According to police, a review of video surveillance shows the man, while pumping fuel, taking the nozzle out of the fuel tank and inserting the nozzle into a hole by the trailer.
The driver was described as black, about 6 feet tall and wearing a beanie.
