Neither March 1 nor March 8 were normal school days for second-grader Hunter Ross.
On March 1, Hunter rescued his sister, Kaelyn Archey, from nearly drowning in a water-filled ditch. While waiting for the school bus, Kaelyn dropped her lunch box on the ice atop the ditch. As she tried to retrieve her lunch box, the ice broke and she fell in the water.
Hunter quickly pulled Kaelyn from the neck-deep water. Kaelyn suffered slight hypothermia.
On March 8, Kosciusko County Sheriff Rocky Goshert paid Hunter a visit at his school, Leesburg Elementary, to honor the young hero for his quick thinking and immediate action.
According to a sheriff’s department news release, when school nurse Karleen Brennan learned of Hunter’s heroic action, she alerted the sheriff.
