SOUTH BEND – Neighbors joined together in South Bend to put up a makeshift lemonade stand at the site where just over a week ago there was a deadly shooting.
The lemonade stand at Vassar and North Adams Saturday brought out not only area residents but also South Bend's mayor and some members of the fire department.
They turned on the hydrants for the kids. And for the adults, it was a chance to get out and talk about taking back the streets.
This past January, that site was the scene of gunfire, bloodshed and violence.
“Instead of having the last thing remembered as something negative on this corner, we give them something positive,” said Maurice McGee, who attended Saturday’s event.
Organizers of the lemonade stand are planning another event - a neighborhood block party in a nearby location for next month. It’s all part of an ongoing effort to get neighbors to band together.
