LAPORTE — Charges have been filed against a man who allegedly used a crane to steal a Jeep from a LaPorte dealership.
Robert Womack, 39, of LaPorte, was charged Friday with Class D felony theft.
According to court documents, Womack pulled into LaPorte Chrysler, 1309 Pine Lake Road, early Oct. 16. Video surveillance shows a man suspected to be Womack exiting a flatbed truck then getting behind the controls of a crane that lifted the Jeep and set it on the trailer.
According to court documents, LaPorte County Police Chief of Detectives John Boyd recognized the crane as possibly Womack's in a surveillance photo of the crane used in the heist.
Police went to the Womack home and saw what they believed to be several vehicles in the process of being disassembled and the crane identical to the one in the heist, reports noted.
According to court records, Womack told officers the truck belongs to Canadian National Railroad, which employs him as a log truck and crane operator.
