INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A fitness buff jumped off a bridge over the White River in downtown Indianapolis to save a stranger who was flailing in the frigid water.
WISH-TV says Homecroft resident Keith Smedema was riding his bike in White River State Park when he saw a woman struggling in the 4-foot-deep river Thursday and dived in to rescue her. Officials estimated the dive at about 40 feet.
Smedema took the woman to a sandbar where they remained for a half-hour until the rescue crew reached them.
Emergency officials say both had hypothermia but no life-threatening injuries. It wasn't clear how the woman fell into the river.
Melina Smedema told The Indianapolis Star her husband is a fitness buff who was bicycling in the park.
Smedema is a retired air traffic controller.
