SOUTH BEND -- A man was found shot and killed, Friday afternoon, near an alley just step from homes.
According to Asst. Metro Homicide Commander Lt. Dave Wells, the male victim was discovered around 3 pm just north of Western Ave. between Illinois St. and Wellington St.
Wells wouldn’t say how many times the man was shot or whether a weapon was recovered from the scene.
Metro Homicide detectives spent the afternoon gathering evidence and interviewing neighbors.
By late afternoon there were no suspects, Wells said.
A woman named Pamela Reed identified the victim as her husband, 50-year-old George Reed.
"I still can't believe it," she told reporters at the scene, "I lost the best thing I ever had."
According to Reed, her husband left home around 2 pm to get some groceries.
"He never came back," she said.
Neighbors described Reed as a well-liked handyman who lived in the community for decades.
"It hurts so bad to see a man gunned down that don't bother nobody," said Larry Palmer, who watched as investigators removed the victim's body, "it's a shame."
