Milford police said Sunday they got a call about 1 p.m. Saturday to a site on the Huron River. It's about 30 miles west-northwest of Detroit.
A police news release says two 16-year-olds were out in a rented canoe when it capsized in the rough water. It says a Milford man tried to rescue the teens in his own canoe, but it also overturned. He was wearing a life jacket.
The second teen made it to shore with minor injuries. Police say the boy who died was from Macomb County's Harrison Township.
Police say they're withholding the victims' names until families are notified.
