A graduate of Culver Academy killed a headmistress at a school in northeast Florida before turning the gun on himself.

Shane Schumerth, 28, graduated from Culver Military Academy in 2002. His father is an instructor there.

This happened Monday afternoon at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Police say Schumerth was aSpanish teacher at the school.

They say he was fired from his job Monday, and returned to the school and killed 63-year-old Dale Regan, who was the headmistress. He then committed suicide.

A student was headed to Schmerth's Spanish class when the shooting happened.

"He was kind of quiet, kind of awkward,” said Robert Steeg. “We described him as awkward, but…I mean for the past few weeks he'd been acting kind of weird. We thought it was because he knew he was getting fired."

It's not known why Schumerth was fired. His father told the Florida Times-Union his family is in shock. He says the family sends prayers to the Episcopal School family.

Schumert was also a 2007 graduate of Purdue University.
