SOUTH BEND -- South Bend chocolate or Alabama ribs?

After some friendly small talk on the phone Wednesday afternoon, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg bet the mayor of Tuscaloosa, Ala., a box of chocolates from South Bend Chocolate Co. that Notre Dame will beat Alabama in the BCS national championship game in January.

In turn, Mayor Walt Maddox wagered ribs from a joint called Dreamland.

"I love ribs almost as much as I love chocolate," Buttigieg told reporters after the two mayors made the wager.

The two men previously met earlier this year at a conference where Maddox spoke about his city's response to devastating tornadoes in April 2011.

The mayors each added a charity bet as well: The loser will donate $100 to a charity of the winner's choice.

Buttigieg said the donation would go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Joseph County.

Before the call, Buttigieg asked for wager suggestions on Facebook, and received a variety of answers, like a box of Chocolate Charlie, the College Football Hall of Fame and even a bet where the loser would dress up as the winner's mascot.

But Buttigieg stuck with the chocolate.

"Maybe I'll send the chocolate after we win anyways," Buttigieg said.
