SOUTH BEND – There’s been a delay in the sentencing of a woman who caused a deadly crash that killed a South Bend woman sleeping in her home.
Police say Erica McCaffrey was speeding and possibly racing another car when she drove into the home at the corner of Corby and Twyckenham on the east side last April.
She was drunk and admitted smoking pot before the crash that took the life of 57-year-old Barbara Knapp.
The house was so badly damaged it had to be torn down.
McCaffrey’s attorney was sick, so the judge on Monday pushed the sentencing back to next month.
“I’d like to say that I wish it would hurry up, because I’m ready to give closure to the family of Mrs. Knapp, and I don’t know what else to say in this matter,” said McCaffrey.
“Probably just frustration is the best word,” Knapp’s son Matt Szymanski tries to describe. “We were hoping to come in here today and get closure.”
McCaffrey faces up to 20 years in prison.
