Wind chills around Michiana could plummet to between 15 and 20 degrees below zero by early Friday morning. Take extra care if you must be outside and please provide protection for your outdoor pets.

Hypothermia occurs when people are exposed to cold temperatures. Signs and symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech and drowsiness.
If there are any signs of hypothermia present, take the person's temperature. If it is below 95°F, the situation is an emergency and medical attention should be sought immediately.
Frostbite occurs when exposed skin freezes. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and color in affected areas. Warning signs and symptoms of frostbite include: Redness or pain in any skin area, a white or grayish yellow skin area, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy and numbness.
If you detect symptoms of frostbite, do not plunge hands or feet into hot water. Rather, use warm water to slowly defrost skin. Seek medical care if frostbite is severe.
Remember, Spring officially arrives at 7:21 p.m. March 20.
