A Michigan City man sought in at least one shooting and a homicide is in custody Tuesday evening, the Indiana State Police report in a press release.
Aaron Di Shon Windom, 25, was captured in Fountain County, Ind., after a police chase Tuesday afternoon. He was sought in the shooting that occurred Thursday evening on Interstate 80 westbound at the Lake Station exit.
Windom is also wanted on several warrants out of Lake and LaPorte counties. He is also a person of interest in a homicide in Lake County.
Police say that at about 2:31 p.m. Central Standard Time (3:31 p.m. EST), the silver 2007 Dodge Charger that was involved in the I-80 shooting was located on Interstate 74 traveling westbound in Montgomery County. A Fountain County sheriff’s deputy and Crawfordsville police officer were able to get behind the vehicle. A pursuit began.
At one point, during the pursuit, a 2008 Freightliner semi-box trailer that also was westbound on I-74 was shot at and hit twice by the suspect in the Charger. The driver of the semi was not injured.
Stop sticks were deployed at about the 10 mile marker by the Fountain County sheriff’s officers. The Charger’s front tire blew; the vehicle lost control and went off the road into a tree line. The driver then fled on foot into the wooded area.
Indiana troopers and K-9 officers were able to locate and capture the suspect, who was hiding in water. A weapon also was located and recovered.
Windom was taken to Saint Elizabeth’s Health Care Hospital in Crawfordsville for hyperthermia. He may be taken to Fountain County Jail, where he faces local charges. He will later be transported and charged at the Lake County Jail in Crown Point. The Indiana State Police said its investigation is being finalized and those charges are pending.
The Dodge Charger involved in the crimes reportedly was stolen in a car-jacking in a suburb of Milwaukee on Thursday. The description of the alleged car-jacker closely matches the description of Windom.
