LUDINGTON, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan couple plan to swim more than 50 miles across Lake Michigan to raise awareness about depression after childbirth.
Sara and Jeff Tow plan to take a boat to Wisconsin on Sunday and then wait for good weather to start swimming from Two Rivers, Wis., to Ludington, Mich.
The Tows, who live in the Grand Rapids area, are trying to draw attention to postpartum depression, which affected both of them after having two children. Jeff Tow tells The Grand Rapids Press (bit.ly/QR5Wrg) that a "significant statement" sometimes is necessary to get noticed. The marathon swim is their statement.
They will be assisted in a boat by Jim Dreyer, a swimmer who conquered Lake Michigan in 1998. Dreyer says lake conditions will play a big role.
