DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit-area woman has been found guilty of murdering her 4-year-old nephew, who authorities say was beaten and tortured to death on Mother's Day last year.
Matilda Gardner of Highland Park was convicted Thursday by a Wayne County Circuit Court jury of felony murder, second-degree murder, torture and first-degree child abuse.
Last month, Gardner's husband pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, torture and first-degree child abuse. Randy Gardner was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison.
Authorities say Robert Byrd Jr. starved to death in his aunt and uncle's care. The boy was bound by the wrists and beaten over a long period of time.
He was found dead on May 8, 2011.
Matilda Gardner is to be sentenced on June 12. She faces mandatory life in prison without parole.
