A Mishawaka couple allegedly cooked up a meth lab in their apartment with the help of two others.

Prosecutors on Wednesday hit Samuel T. Ford and Dartisha L. Jones with felony counts of manufacturing methamphetamine inside their apartment in the 500 block of Lincoln Way West, near Kamm's Island Park.

Ford, 45, was slapped with one count each of manufacturing methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a public park, a Class A felony, and maintaining a common nuisance, a Class D felony.

Jones, 23, was tagged with a single count of manufacturing methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a public park.

Mishawaka police got wind of the home-cooked meth lab when they received a call saying a neighbor "was becoming sick from a chemical smell emanating from (the apartment) in the building," according to the case's probable cause affidavit filed in St. Joseph Superior Court.

When police went to the apartment, Jones let them in and the officers "could smell a chemical odor," according to the affidavit.

Police also spotted "in plain view narcotic smoking devices on a table in the living room," and a clear plastic pop bottle with white and pink residue inside, prosecutors charged.

Officers executed a search warrant and found a Coleman fuel can and items "they identified as precursors to the manufacture of methamphetamine," according to the affidavit.

Jones and Ford allegedly told police that two friends staying at the apartment were both involved with making meth inside the home, and that one of the men "would go out of the house to burp the reaction vessel," the affidavit stated.

Jones said Ford and one of the friends "would smoke the meth that was made," prosecutors charged in the affidavit.

Jones and Ford appeared in St. Joseph Superior Court Wednesday.

Bond was set for each at $50,000, or $5,000 cash.
