SOUTH BEND — The Juvenile Justice Center is seeking to transfer about $99,000 from its 2011 budget to finance improvements at the 15-year-old facility, including new light poles and carpeting.
According to Executive Director Peter Morgan, the metal light poles in the parking lot, installed when the center was built, are rusting from the inside out and need to be replaced at a cost of about $45,000.
The new poles, he said, will be made of a non-corrosive material to prevent rusting.
The center also needs to replace the carpet tiles throughout the building, Morgan said. The current tiles are worn, he said, and pose a tripping hazard.
The cost to replace the tiles is estimated at about $24,000.
Finally, the center plans to reseal, paint and stripe the entire 108,000-square-foot parking lot at a cost of $11,195, Morgan said, and replace nine outdated handheld security radios at a cost of $19,500.
The County Council will consider the transfer at its next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the fourth floor of County-City Building, 227 W. Jefferson Blvd.
