INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana lawmakers wrangling with a plan that would have stripped a gay support group of its specialty license plates are now likely to study the issue instead.
Senate President Pro Tem David Long said Friday that he expects a moratorium on approving new specialty plates for various groups while lawmakers form a study committee. State lawmakers were set to wrap up work on their 2012 session by the end of the day Friday.
House and Senate Republicans had been working on a broad overhaul of the state's system for granting specialty license plates. But conservative lawmakers and lobbyists launched a behind-the-scenes effort to target the Indiana Youth Group. The group which supports gay children in Indiana recently won a court battle to issue the specialty plates bearing their name.
