MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team is heading to Missouri for a teammate's funeral.
Freshman midfielder Arianna Alioto from Columbia, Mo., drowned Nov. 30 at the Marquette school's Physical Education Instructional Facility. The 18-year-old Alioto redshirted this fall while recovering from a knee injury.
Northern Michigan spokeswoman Cindy Paavola says 22 players, the head coach and others are taking a university bus to Columbia, where they're to attend a visitation Friday afternoon and a funeral service Saturday morning.
The university is covering the cost of the bus, while donors are footing the bill for the team's meals and lodging costs.
