Witnesses say some Good Samaritans worked together to help victims of a crash Friday afternoon at Sample Street and Lombardy Drive in South Bend.
It happened just before 4:30. Police say a pickup heading eastbound on Sample ran the stop sign at Lombardy, hitting a southbound minivan. The van rolled over onto its side.
Nearby residents rushed to the accident and found the driver and an infant slightly pinned. According to witnesses, four people were able to roll the van back onto its wheels and free them.
Police say six people, including the infant, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries – the worst being a 9 year old with a broken elbow and a gash on the infant’s head.
Police suspect some level of alcohol use by the truck's driver. After a field sobriety test was inconclusive, the driver was taken by police to the hospital to have blood drawn. It could take 6 to 10 days for results.
The FACT team is investigating the crash.
