GOSHEN –A major traffic change could be coming to Elkhart County.
The state is looking to build a new railroad overpass on Goshen's Northeast side.
Indiana's Department of Transportation says the new overpass would be by the tracks near Cottage Avenue and Lincoln Way East.
As part of the project, US. 33 would be realigned south of the proposed overpass along the railroad tracks. It would go all the way to the existing stretch of U.S 33 near Goshen High School. The overpass would go up several blocks north of the Madison Street crossing which was once a possibility for the site of a new railroad overpass.
“At this point it is looking more like InDOT is going to move the traffic along the railroad track from the high school to downtown and diverting the traffic from Madison Street with an overpass over the railroad track.” Said Goshen Mayor Allan Kauffman.
The state is expected to make decision on a final route for the 35-million dollar overpass project this summer.
