MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) — The new prosecutor in southwestern Indiana's Posey County says his top priority is going after makers of the illegal drug methamphetamine.
Prosecutor Travis Clowers told television station WEHT the drug has become so prevalent ome people now refer to the county seat of Mount Vernon as "Meth Vernon."
Clowers said during his campaign last fall nearly every voter he spoke to told him meth was the biggest crime issue in the county west of Evansville.
He says meth makers take advantage of Posey County's abundant farm land to set up clandestine labs and use the drugs.
WEHT quotes Indiana State Police as saying meth activity was up nearly 30 percent statewide in 2010 and that the majority of meth labs that were busted were in southern Indiana.
