STEVENSVILLE —Tyler Honda hopes to be in a new dealership at 4356 Red Arrow Highway by the end of the year.
Work already is under way preparing the site for Pearson Construction of Benton Harbor to begin building the 20,000-square-foot building to house the showroom, service, parts and other components of the dealership.
The business is relocating from its existing location at 2149 E. Napier Ave., Benton Harbor, because its current facility is too large -- about 53,000 square feet -- for a single brand and the move will allow it to be located at the center of its customer base, said Chris Tyler, president of the dealership.
In addition, the new location is near Exit 23 off Interstate 94, which Tyler believes is a growing area of Berrien County, thanks in part to the construction of a new Meijer store at 5019 Red Arrow Highway.
The new dealership will be built according to Honda's specifications because it is seeking some level of consistency -- as are most auto manufacturers -- among its dealerships.
"Honda wanted us to build so it was a perfect opportunity," said Tyler. "It will be a seamless shift to the new store."
Tyler is spending between $2.5 million and $3 million on the project. The Tyler Automotive Group includes several dealerships along South 11th Street in Niles, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Kia.
The business acquired the former Schroeder Motor Mall in Benton Harbor in 2008. It currently employs about 30.
