Kristin Bien reports for WSBT First Thing in the Morning and anchors WSBT Saturday Morning. Her energy and enthusiasm helps wake you up and keep you informed Monday through Saturday mornings.
Kristin gets up early every morning (around 2:00 a.m.). She focuses on breaking news and news that matters to you like stories on weather, upcoming court cases, education and in-depth looks at local issues. She loves doing the fun stuff too!
Before joining WSBT, she worked at KMOT-TV in Minot, North Dakota. While there she wore many hats. She was a reporter, photographer, assignment editor and assistant news director. She also anchored the 6 p.m. newscast Monday through Friday. In 2009, she was awarded the North Dakota Broadcasters Association Teddy Award for "Best News Anchor" in the state.
Since joining the WSBT team Kristin has won three major statewide awards for her reporting. At the Indiana Associated Press 2011 Broadcast News Competition she won 1st place Best Investigative Report for her work investigating a local farming operation that was discharging scalding hot water into a creek. She also won 2nd place for her Investigative Report on the counties in Michigan that still allow the use of gas chambers to euthanize animals. She also took home 3rd place for Best Reporter in the State.
Before starting her TV career, Kristin earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Communication from the University of Indianapolis. While working as a reporter on UIndy's college TV show she earned first place for "Best TV story" with the Indiana Association of Schools in 2003. In 2004, she won a second place award for "TV news or feature" and a third place award from the Society of Professional Journalists for "Best reporting."
Kristin grew up in Huntley, Illinois, just outside Chicago. Kristin lives in South Bend with her husband and their dogs. She loves seeing shows at the Morris Performing Arts Center and hanging out at Silver Beach in St. Joseph, MI in the summer. When she's not at work, you can find her and her husband traveling or attempting to garden.
