Pete Byrne brings his unique perspective and a passion for sports to viewers every night, as WSBT-TV's sports director.
More than a decade of sport journalism experience has taken Pete to the Super Bowl, MLB opening day, playoffs in all four major sports, the PGA Tour, the Frozen Four, the Final Four, and the BCS. However, the best part of covering sports for WSBT is being home and following the teams he really loves.
Pete grew up in South Bend and went to high school at Trinity where he played basketball, baseball and just a little soccer. I was the goalie!, he admits.
He graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in Communications in 1999. While at ND, he was the equipment manager for the football and hockey programs, spending thousands of hours behind the scenes. He is the only member of the local sports media to earn a Notre Dame monogram as an undergraduate.
Pete returned to Michiana and WSBT in 2006, after spending seven years covering sports in Minnesota and North Dakota.
Pete is thrilled to be back home, covering his beloved Fighting Irish, along with all his other favorite local teams including the Cubs, Bears, and Bulls. He's also happy to be back covering some of the best high school sports around, including Hoosier Hysteria - the best high school basketball in the country if you ask me!
Don't be surprised if you find Pete out at a local golf course ... talking up a better game than he can play!
When not on the links, he likes to spend free time at the gym and (surprise) watching sports.
Pete and his wife Jen have two kids, Nicki and Jack.
