Good training and better equipment. Those are two key factors the South Bend Fire Department is crediting for the city not reporting a single fire related death last year.
Over the last 15 years the city has averaged four deaths a year. That makes this new report even more impressive.
The city can't find the last time on record that South Bend went an entire year without someone dying in a fire.
The fire department also announced a new fire safety house for training. This is a mobile safety house that can be taken around the city. A federal grant paid for 80 percent of it, the local firefighters union paid for 10 percent and the city the rest.
