TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Efforts to step up school security in Michigan include a $20,000 investment at Northwestern Michigan College to make it easier for teachers to lock classroom doors from the inside.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/12oCrE3 ) the school decided to modify locks so teachers would no longer need a key to lock the door from the inside.
Vicki Cook, NMC's vice president of finance and administration, says the school this month also will install a system that can send a voice message to more than 800 phones on four campuses in less than five minutes. The feature will cost $16,000 over five years.
Schools across Michigan are among those nationwide reviewing security measures following December's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
